Smokin' Hot Quilts:

A Havasu Stitchers Project Honoring

Lake Havasu City Firefighters

Terrie Eller has brought a new community quilt project to the Havasu Stitchers.

We are introducing a project to make a quilt for all our Lake Havasu City Firefighters.  We currently have 6 fire stations in our city and a 7th fire station is in the planning stages.  We will be making twin-size quilts (70" x 90") for our local firefighters to use at the fire station beds.  Special labels will be made for all the quilts, so you don't need to worry about the labels.  We will also be designing and making coordinated wall hangings for each of the fire stations to hang.  We have permission to use the firefighter logos, so we will be coming up with a standard design and size for each station and will need help making them.

We have some fabric from recent donations and have bundles available for you to take home to make a quilt.  We welcome any donations from your personal stashes.  We will also supply batting.  Terrie will have several fabric bundles for you to choose from at the September general meeting.

We have reserved a date to present the quilts to the firefighters at the Lake Havasu City Aquatic Center on November 6, 2024, at 1:00 p.m., with the Mayor in attendance.  The firefighters will be able to come and choose their quilts.  We will also be displaying a few of the quilts at the City office lobby in the month of October 2024.  This will be a great event to publicize our Havasu Stitchers to the community.

Here is what we are planning:

  • Lake Havasu City firehouses only
  • 100 quilts made from now to October 2024
  • One 70 x 90 quilt for each firefighter for use on the station beds
  • A wall hanging for each fire station (size to be advised)
  • Special labels
  • Distribution Event on November 6, 2024, from 1:00 to 3:00 at the Aquatic Center

What we need from YOU, our members:

    • Fabric and batting will be provided from donations
    • Any fabric from your stashes is appreciated and welcome
    • Quilt tops, finished size 70" x 90"
    • Donated labor for assembling blocks and complete tops, quilting, and binding

We've made up some design charts to help you if you would like.  There are three options:  Using a 10" block or a 5" block or a 10" block with a 5" border.  Remember this is finished size, so you'll need to add your seam allowances.  Of course, you can make whatever design you like.  These charts are just to draw out ideas.

  • Option 1:  10" blocks, need 63 blocks
  • Option 2:  5" blocks, need 252 blocks
  • Option 3:  10" blocks with a 5" border, need x blocks and 5" strips

We can provide some simple quilt patterns for you.  You are welcome to use them or not, as you choose.  Copies of patterns will be available at the meetings.  All quilts must be 70" x 90" finished. Remember to add your seam allowances when cutting.

An easy way to do this is to make 63 - 10½ inch unfinished blocks.  Keep in mind the firefighters are all currently men, so let’s make some masculine designs.

January 2024 - we have FOUR completed quilts for our project.
